The Sankofa Scholars Program is a youth leadership and education initiative dedicated to empowering the next generation of thinkers, creators, and community changemakers. Inspired by the Akan principle of Sankofa—which means “go back and fetch it”—our program helps students embrace their heritage, learn from history, and apply those lessons to build a stronger, more equitable future.

Through mentorship, academic support, leadership training, and cultural education, Sankofa Scholars gain the skills and confidence to succeed in college, their careers, and their communities. We believe that when young people understand their history, they are better equipped to lead with purpose and vision.

Knowledge & Cultural Awareness
This pillar emphasizes understanding the past to inform the present. Scholars explore the rich tapestry of African and African diasporic history, leadership, and resilience. By learning from those who came before, participants gain the wisdom and perspective necessary to navigate today’s challenges with confidence and purpose. – “We look back to move forward.”

Peer Engagement & Shared Growth
This pillar highlights the power of connection — with peers, mentors, and the broader community. Scholars engage in dialogue, collaborative projects, and service that foster empathy, teamwork, and collective empowerment. Personal Development & Enlightened Leadership
This pillar centers on transformation. Scholars apply historical insight and community connection to become more well-rounded, critical thinkers and change-makers.
