Skip to content Petersburg, Virginia • Connecting the African Diaspora
Sankofa Travels with Kofi is a nonprofit connecting people of African descent through cultural education, purposeful travel, dialogue and exchange. At the heart of our work is the Sankofa Scholars Program—a year-round youth development experience for Central Virginia students.
Our Mission
The African Diaspora is connected by more than geography. We create opportunities for people to learn together, travel with purpose, exchange ideas, celebrate culture and build lasting relationships across communities and continents.
Our flagship Sankofa Scholars Program prepares young people to lead. Our travel experiences, community conversations, cultural celebrations and wellness programs invite people of all ages to take part in the larger mission.
Our Flagship Program
Sankofa Scholars is a year-round heritage education, leadership development and cultural exchange program for students in Petersburg and Central Virginia. Scholars participate in workshops, mentorship, community service, cultural activities and global exchanges that strengthen identity, confidence and civic leadership.
A cultural immersion journey to Ghana is a signature experience—but the program begins long before the flight and continues after students return home.

Culture in Motion
Our mission is not confined to an airport or a classroom. Through movement, conversation, celebration and shared experiences, we help people across generations build meaningful connections to African and Diaspora culture—and to one another.
