At Sankofa Travels with Kofi, we connect the African diaspora through travel, dialogue, and cultural exchange.

We are a Petersburg, Virginia-based nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting people of African descent with the history, culture, and communities of Africa. Through transformative educational and cultural travel experiences, we help participants deepen their understanding of the African diaspora, build meaningful international relationships, and develop a stronger sense of identity and global citizenship.

At the heart of our work is the Sankofa Scholars Program, which provides high school students with opportunities to explore their heritage through cultural education, leadership development, and immersive travel experiences. By connecting young people with peers and mentors across Africa, particularly in Ghana, we foster pride, curiosity, cross-cultural understanding, and a lifelong commitment to learning and service.

The name “Sankofa” comes from an Akan principle that teaches us to “go back and fetch what has been forgotten.” We embrace this philosophy by creating pathways for people to reconnect with their roots, honor the past, and build a brighter future. Through travel, education, and cultural exchange, Sankofa Travels with Kofi inspires individuals and communities to see themselves as part of a larger global story.
